Case Study 1: Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) for The Trafford College Group
The Problem
I oversee pastoral care for a large Further Education College containing over 12,000 students. Suicidal ideation and risk of suicide represented 10% of our total safeguarding referrals for 2022-23.
What We Did
In response to this we contacted Alice to deliver the full ASIST programme to our mentor and safeguarding team. Alice’s communication throughout the process was excellent.
The training was over two days and I could only describe it as life changing.
Alice and her team were able to sensitively and empathically share difficult content in a way that empowered staff to carry out a professional assessment and action any resulting interventions.
Outcomes
Since the training my team regularly use the Pathway for Assisting Life (PAL) model taught in ASIST and it genuinely save lives. My team and I have become more comfortable talking about suicide and creating an open and non-judgemental culture that promotes people to speak out.
I truly believe that this training should be a mandatory requirement as with physical first aid. If you are able to attend or offer this to your staff don’t hesitate – it could save a life.
