A practical approach to responding to invitations of suicide in schools
Notice, Ask, Listen, Connect (NALC) is a practical, compassionate approach designed to help school staff respond confidently when a pupil may be experiencing thoughts of suicide.
The approach gives participants a simple framework for noticing possible verbal, behavioural and situational invitations, asking directly about suicide, listening without judgement, and connecting the pupil safely with appropriate support.
Participants explore why we can sometimes overlook signs of distress, feel uncertain about what they mean, or hesitate to ask about suicide, and develop the confidence to respond calmly when a pupil may be struggling. The session also helps staff understand the limits of their role, including when and how to involve designated safeguarding leads and follow established school procedures.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Notice verbal, behavioural and situational invitations that may indicate thoughts of suicide.
- Understand why we can sometimes overlook signs of distress, feel uncertain about what they mean, or hesitate to ask about suicide.
- Ask directly and confidently about suicide.
- Respond with calm, compassionate listening.
- Understand the limits and responsibilities of their role.
- Safely connect a pupil with the appropriate staff memebers within the school to safeguard the pupil and safety plans, and follow school procedures.
